“Irish Culture and History – Artifacts and Photographs”

Photography by Carol Martin

With a display of Irish musical instruments and historical artifacts

March 1 – April 30, 2018

This month we are delighted to not only display Carol’s photographs but to have showcases filled with Irish instruments and historical artifacts.

Carol and Ireland have a longstanding relationship: “I am an amateur photographer whose passion in life is traveling through Ireland taking photographs of the magnificent countryside. I was born and spent most of my life in Union County and moved to Monmouth County in 2004. I have made 29 trips to Ireland since my first trip in 1985 traveling through all 32 counties. Besides my photography, I also organize group trips and take people to Ireland. My next group trip is planned for July 2018.

My love of photography started when I received my first simple camera as a Confirmation gift from my father. After I purchased my first Nikon, the magic of photography really took hold of me.

I have been secretary of the Joseph Nugent, Sr. Association, the oldest independent Irish-American organization in the State of New Jersey, for at least 30 years. I was the Vendor Chairman of the Garden State Arts Center Irish Festival for five years. I have also written several articles about my travels in Ireland which have been published in several newspapers and on-line newsletters.

I worked as a secretary at Merck & Co. until taking early retirement in 2003. It was after I retired that my children suggested I frame some of my photos and sell them. I was reluctant to do it, but it has really opened up a whole new adventure in my life and I have met so many wonderful people at the various Irish festivals where I participate as a vendor. Many of them have joined me on my trips to Ireland and have become good friends. It has been a very rewarding experience and I am grateful my father gave me that little camera so many years ago.”

Thanks to Seton Hall we have showcases with instruments that are important to Ireland, some historical artifacts, china, crystal, marble, all made in Ireland
